hi! i’m valeria molinari (she/they) a multidisciplinary creative human from Venezuela, with a diverse practice that includes textile work, video installation, illustration, art direction and community organising. experimenting with different mediums is one of my favourite things in the world, which is why is hard for me to identify myself with just one artistic label. for the past roughly fifteen years a lot of my work has existed in the cross section between art and activism, mostly trying to create a space of discomfort, but ultimately, reflection.
language, i would venture saying, is my favourite medium of all; and my main source of inspiration. we, as a species, sadly, have created this one method of communication, we don’t have another, so the weight it carries is massive; and even though we use it to express, love, care and solidarity, we’ve also used it to diminish, oppress, silence and guilt people, each other, even ourselves.
within my work i try to use language as a tool to remind the viewer of the power of words, mostly words that surround themes of rape, violence and systems built to oppress. the marriage of language and thread, allows me to explore the delicate with the unfathomable, an ancestral craft with pain, trying to remind the viewer of the unquestioned.
through my process i’ve tried to find a sort of redemption, both personal and collective.
as for credentials, i have a BFA in animation and media art from the art institute of california, and an MFA from maryland institute college of art in illustration practices. i have also worked as a professor both in venezuela at centro de diseño digital, and mexico at universidad de monterrey (udem). i’ve also have guest lectured in different universities across the united states, canada, mexico, venezuela and spain, as well as united nation symposiums.
I am currently available for freelance work, basic to advance workshops and speaking engagements. If you’re interested in working with me, please feel free to send an email: hola@valeriamolinari.com
